The Story of Temple Grandin on HBO

The life story of Temple Grandin, a well known author and autism speaker, is finally beginning filming in October. It has been reported that the film has been in development for over 9 years and that Claire Danes is in negotiations to play Dr. Grandin, who has a high functioning autism. Dr. Grandin has her doctorate and has been instrumental in helping design humane slaughterhouses. The "unititled Temple Grandin project" is in pre-production an… Continue

Increase in measles cases possibly linked to parents' fear of autism

The New York Times reported that there has been an increase in the number of measles cases in the United States, Britain, Switzerland, Israel, and Italy. Furthermore, most of those who contracted the disease were unvaccinated. Public health officials report that many parents continue to believe that vaccines cause autism, even though numerous studies have not supported suc… Continue

Chelation Study Cancelled!

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is no longer pursuing the controversial study examining the impact of chelation therapy on children with autism. Although Dr. Jenny McCarthy would have you believe otherwise, a previous study (October 2006) involving the effects of chelation therapy on rodents who did not have elevated levels of heavy metals, found that it caused lasting cognitive and emotional problems. So, the Institutiona… Continue

Michael Savage, Conservative Radio Host, is a Brat

So, this is what Michael Savage had to say about the autism epidemic on his radio show last week, which is broadcast weekly on NYC's WOR-AM: "In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out." He added: "What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, `Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, you idiot.'" Mr. Sa… Continue

"Heavy Metal" Treatment for ASDs to be Studied

Thanks to the clamor stirred up by Jenny McCarthy, the government will now be conducting research on the efficacy of chelation treatment on alleviating the core symptoms of autism. According to Ms. McCarthy, who holds a Ph.D in pseudoscience, "A lot of people are scared to chelate ... but it has triggered many recoveries." To date, there has been no scientific evidence to support this treatment, so I am unclea… Continue

Hi Ariane, thanks for the welcome. I've joined to try and get to know more about Aspies and help my son and also help my other two understand how he feels. Take care and have a great day.

Sorry it has taken so long for me to respond. Have you ever considered assistive technology (like a word processor, word prediction) to alleviate potential fine-motor issues related to writing? Also, would his math teacher be open to priming? (see my priming post) I know he is in middle school and there is usually the pressure for him to become more independent, but there are other ways his teachers can take the stress off of him...what do you think?

He really has 2 issues that get him going. The first one is having to rewrite a draft on work he has done. The second is being patient enough to learn and understand the math (pre-algebra). He wants to keep everything he learns in his head. He is not into taking notes.
He does have an IEP, and a 1:1 aide. His aide is a patient woman who has been working with special ed. kids in the same middle school for several years now. She volunteered to take on my son. His frustration level builds when she tries to get him to stay on task. He will arbitrarily yell things out that he really does not mean. Sometimes he acts disrespectful towards his aide and his teachers even though he knows better when he is not in "a moment". I don't have these issues with him at home.
I worry about his frustration level more then anything else. I don't think he should have to spend his day hating school. If he could possibly take the most minimal dosage that would last only while at school, I am considering this option--but it is not set in stone. Just something to take off that edge.
